    Description

    Marquetery brown turtleshell and copper bracket clock. Chiselled gilt bronze ornamentation. Blue and white cartouche enamelled dial with Roman numerals for hours and Arabic numerals for minutes on gilt bronze base decorated with stylized fleurs de lys. A putto holding a lighted torch on the top, a chained young woman, probably Andromeda, on the dor of the dial. Important gilt bronze ornamentation of scrolls, shells, pearls, trophy of love. The clock strikes hours. Striking on request. Dial signed "Caussard à Paris", the watchmaker referenced in the "Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français" by Tardy, page 116. Caussard was "the watchmaker of the King following the Court". Similar bracket clock in "L'Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française" de Pierre Kjellberg, p.71. The stam crowned C on the bronze, this stamp was used between 1745 and 1749.
